Central North Island carpentry apprentice Rhys Forsyth (second from right) was chosen in early November as national winner of the Registered Master Builders 2007 Apprentice of the Year competition.

Rhys is from National Park, where he is employed by National Park Construction. He is pictured at the awards ceremony in Wellington with (from left) second placegetter Matt Sharp (Wellington), new Building and Construction Minister Hon Shane Jones, who presented Rhys with his award, and third placegetter Blair Stewart (Southern region). The Department of Building and Housing is a co-sponsor of the competition with Carters, the Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation and the Registered Master Builders Federation.

Rhys was selected as winner from 10 regional finalists, who in turn had been selected from a record 133 entries nationwide. This is the fourth year of the competition, but the first for which a national title has been awarded.
