Solicitor/Senior Solicitor

Fixed Term (Parental Leave Cover)

  • Great public sector legal work
  • High-performing and respected team
  • Friendly, collegial atmosphere

The Department of Building and Housing is looking for a dynamic solicitor or senior solicitor to join its in-house legal team of eight for a fixed term 12-month period to cover a parental leave vacancy. This is an outstanding opportunity for someone who wants to make their mark in the public sector, doing interesting and challenging work, in a great environment.

You will be involved in a wide variety of public sector general practice, developing regulations, and helping implement new and existing legislation and regulation for which the Department is responsible.

You will have the opportunity to work with the Crown Law Office, Parliamentary Counsel, and senior external legal counsel. You will develop close working relationships with internal clients, and will have the opportunity to advise senior managers.

You will also be part of a high-performing, cohesive and supportive team that enjoys its work, has a genuine work-life balance, and has a great sense of humour. You will have excellent support from the more senior members of the team, and will be encouraged to take professional development opportunities that arise.

Ideally you will have 3-5 years legal experience, preferably with some public sector or public law experience, although this is not a pre-requisite. You will also need to be eligible to hold a New Zealand practicing certificate. This role would be well suited to a solicitor looking to make their first move into a senior position. The role will involve being the primary contact and lead advisor for several internal client groups.

Whether the appointment is at a solicitor or senior solicitor level will depend on the background of the successful applicant.

If you would like to discuss this opportunity further, please call John Sneyd, Chief Advisor Legal, on 04 817 4276. You can find a role description and application form below, and more information about the Department on our website www.dbh.govt.nz.

To apply for this role, please send a copy of your CV, a covering letter and an application form quoting role number 1143 to jobs@dbh.govt.nz.

Applications close at 5pm on Monday 2 November 2009.
